Are you certain that your internal modem is not Linux compatable; that is to say, are you certain that your internal modem is a "WinModem?" If your modem is more than a year old, then there is a good chance that it is not a winmodem and can used just fine under Linux. But if you are sure that you have a WinModem, then yeah, you will need another one for Linux. In this case, an external modem is definitely the way to go. My experience is that there is very little real-world difference between 33.6k and 56k modems so you may do quite well picking up a used 33.6 external. -p.
